BLACK HMONG
Women from the Black Hmong ethnic minority group of northern Vietnam hand draw intricate batik designs and hand embroider colorful bands of fabric for their traditional handwoven pleated hemp skirts. They grow their own hemp and indigo for weaving and dyeing their textiles. Using locally foraged beeswax, their batik designs feature favorite Hmong motifs.
In the Hmong culture, all family members must have new clothes to start their new year. We purchase pre-worn skirts from Black Hmong women, providing a source of income from clothing they no longer wear. We repurpose their beautiful textiles, giving them new life as one-of-a-kind bags and homewares.
