Women from the Black Flower Hmong ethnic minority group in northern Vietnam are expert batik artists, natural indigo dyers and embroiderers. They employ all of these techniques to embellish their traditional clothing, using market-bought cotton as their base material. In the Hmong tradition, one must wear all new clothes for the New Year. We purchase used Black Flower Hmong skirts and jackets directly from the artisans who made them. We repurpose their beautiful indigo batik and distinctive embroidery into bags, small accessories, and homewares.
